ECRS Introduces Innovative Self-Checkout Solution
New open solution reduces cost of ownership, eliminates vendor reliance, provides OS neutrality, allows plug-in customization, and enhances the consumer experience.
ECRS announces the release of a new software-centric approach to self-checkout. After extensive field-testing that included processing over 400,000 consumer transactions, ECRS has begun marketing an innovative self-checkout solution that drastically reduces the cost of such systems and eliminates the retailer’s reliance on proprietary vendor offerings. The new Java-based self-checkout software can be purchased in two forms: (1) as a complete plug-and-play solution, or (2) as a software-only package. ECRS's complete plug-and-play solution will be marketed under the ECRS QUICKcheck™ brand, and will be available in two configurations: (1) a Single-Bag kiosk, and (2) a Four-Bag Express unit. The software-only package allows retailers to select from best-of-breed ATM and POS components and cabinet providers, which in turn allows retailers to standardize with the same or similar equipment currently in use at their POS. This open hardware customization approach allows retailers to eliminate vendor reliance and greatly reduce acquisition and servicing costs.
The ECRS QUICKcheck system has many innovative and patented features that enhance and simplify the consumer experience at the shelf-checkout. QUICKcheck’s patented AmbDex™ feature, for example, provides the perfect balance between security and usability by allowing the consumer to scan multiple items using both hands before placing them on the security-bagging platform. QUICKcheck also provides added value with its ability to handle peak business demands by emulating a fully functioning cashier-operated POS terminal during periods of increased customer traffic. QUICKcheck’s modern development flexibility is facilitated by its innovative Java architecture, which allows retailers and third parties to easily add new functionality via software plug-ins. The Java source code is also available under special licensing.
Dave Kiefer, VP of Self-Checkout Sales, has been appointed to direct the company’s self-checkout marketing activities. Mr. Kiefer has 26 years of retail POS experience with 4 years of exclusive involvement in self-checkout at Optimal Robotics, as well as experience in self-checkout at NCR Corporation.
